Hello everyone! This is the first of three episodes where I attempt to create a stock tank de-icer using a bilge pump instead of using a standard stock tank heater. The idea being that I can keep the water from freezing by keeping it moving. I stumbled across the idea online while researching stock tank heaters, so I thought I would give it a try. The bilge pump method uses about 3% of the power used by a standard tank heater/de-icer (assuming a 100+ gallon stock tank), so energy savings is the main motivator for this project.
A small spoiler alert - this turned out to be a success, but I had to work through a few problems to get what I wanted in the end. Keep watching the next two videos to see how everything turns out! We don't own a stock tank heater, so we had to break a lot of ice while I was getting this figured out!
Also, I wanted to give a shout out to the guy that gave me the idea in the first place, but after searching the internet and YouTube for quite awhile, I could not find his info again. He actually makes kits similar to my setup and sells them online, and he uses the same pump I am using (Tsunami bilge pump made by Attwood). If you come across his website or YouTube videos, please let me know so I can link to them.
Thanks for watching!
